Chemistry of the p-block elements is an essential and integral component of the chemistry curriculum from the school level to the post-graduate level all over the world. The elements of groups 13–18 of the periodic table, also known as main group elements, differ significantly from the transition and inner transition elements.
These elements and their compounds stand out from the rest of the elements because of their wide variety of proven applications including as fertilisers, crop protection agents, semiconductors, solar cells, pesticides, LEDs, explosives, catalysts, polymers, disinfectants and medicines. Each element of the p-block is unique with respect to its properties and applications which this book brings out emphatically and with clarity.

Dr Anil J Elias is senior professor (HAG) at the Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, New Delhi. After completing his Ph.D in the inorganic chemistry of sulfur–nitrogen compounds from IIT Madras, he gained further experience as an Alexander von Humboldt fellow in Germany in silicon chemistry and later at the fluorine research laboratories of the University of Idaho, USA. He has been teaching undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students at IIT Kanpur and at IIT Delhi for over 25 years. His research interests are in the area of organometallic chemistry and chemistry of the p-block elements. He has published more than 70 research papers in international journals of repute, guided many Ph.D students and is the author of two widely used textbooks—Basic Organometallic Chemistry (along with Prof. B D Gupta) and General Chemistry Experiments (both Universities press).Prof. Elias is also the recipient of three awards for excellence in teaching—INSA Teacher Award conferred by the Indian National Science Academy, Best Chemistry Teacher Award (sponsored by Tata Chemicals, Royal Society of Chemistry and Association of Chemistry Teachers, and others), and Teaching Excellence Award conferred by IIT Delhi for undergraduate teaching.
