Finite Element Analysis: Procedures in Engineering covers the basic concepts, mathematical models and computational algorithms that support the finite element method (FEM). It is a complete and self-contained book which will enable comprehension of FEM as a numerical method for engineering analysis and also provide insight to commercial finite element analysis (FEA) software to solve practical problems. The topics covered include 1-D elements, 2-d continuum elements (both triangular and quadrilateral in shape) , creation of C0 continuous interpolation functions and use of Gauss quadrature formulae to compute element matrices and vectors, higher order isoparametric elements, finite element modelling and analysis of axisymmetric solid bodies subjected to thermal and mechanical loads, 3-D continuum elements (of different shapes--tetrahedral, hexahedra, and pentahedra and increasing orders—linear, quadratic and cubic), and application of FEA in stress analysis of complex solid bodies. General-purpose FEA programs are briefly introduced, mainly with a focus to their organization and capabilities. Each chapter contains test problems and target solutions along with computational problems for home assignments.
